Thanks 2012 For The Memories - All Of Them

It's been quite a year.  Personally for me, it's been about family and friends.  It's been about travel and races and cruises.  It's been full of blessings every single day.

But it's also been about unimaginable heartbreak and tragedy on a national level.  It's been about political disagreements and opinions.  It's been about issues and rights and accusations.  It's been about bad weather and Mayans and the media.

Somehow we've made it through it all, and have been changed from it.  Each day may have opened our eyes and hearts, made our personal feelings a little stronger and more audible, and made us more aware of our surroundings and responsibilities.  Here's hoping that we've become better people in the 366 days that 2012 gave us.

So thanks 2012, for each day.  You were a very good year!

That's What Friends Are For

Yesterday I waxed poetic about resolutions.  The gist of my rantings was that I should start now and not wait for some arbitrary date on which to start doing the stuff I wish to be doing.  My final wish was for the ability to kick myself in the butt so that I could get started and keep going.

However, along with my wish not coming through and my middle-aged menopausal memory (MMM for those of you in the know), I did not proceed as I had planned.  While on a trip to Kroger, I saw some fish patties that I thought would be yummy, so I bought them (completely ignoring any nutritional facts and/or Weight Watcher points).  I brought them home and ate them - a lot of them.  In sandwiches.  So much for the "good eating" hope and dream.

While in a fish-patty stupor, I happened upon facebook, and noticed my friend Anita (you know, the smart one who made lists of words that she didn't know when she read something so she could find out the meaning, unlike some of us who guess at a word's meaning only to find out chapters later that not only have you misrepresented the word, but you have successfully transformed the entire point of the character, chapter, and book) had commented on my post (by the way, I would tell you the latest word she looked up, since she posted it on facebook, but knowing me, I probably have that definition wrong, too, although I have no idea what in the heck she must be reading now!).

Anyhow, she quoted the following from my blogpost:
"It's easy to say I'm going to do something - in the new year. Just as soon as January 1 gets here. But all that really means is that I don't want to start doing whatever it is NOW."
BOOM!  The kick in the pants I needed to remind myself of what I want to do. And that, my friends, is what friends are for, even though you might not have seen them in forever, and now only see them in cyberspace.  Thanks, Anita, for giving me just what I needed!

Now if I can just get VAJAZZLE out of my mind ...

Looking Forward

As 2012 is coming quickly to a close, I am prone to think about the things I want to do in the new year (okay, so maybe one might call them "resolutions").  It's easy to say I'm going to do something - in the new year.  Just as soon as January 1 gets here.  But all that really means is that I don't want to start doing whatever it is NOW.

For instance, I want to eat better.  You know, not eat so/too much, make healthy choices, eschew the bad stuff, blah, blah, blah.  I want to start doing that on January 1.  Not today when I went through Wendy's and got the meal deal, complete with french fries.

I want to exercise and jog on a regular basis.  Just not today.  Because if I did it today, it would get into my french-fry eating time.  But come January 1, I'm going to do it.  Really.

I want to clean my house and do stuff like mop the kitchen floor and clean the baseboards before they both get so dirty I forget what color they are.  But not today - I'm just not even going to look at them, hence not having to notice how dirty they might be.  But come January 1, that floor and those baseboards are going to be gleaming.  Honestly.

I could keep going on and on, but you and I both know the real story.  If I can't start it tomorrow (or even now), chances are that the date of 1-1-13 won't make any difference.  So why wait?  Why not start right away?  Why not take Nike's advice and just do it?  As in just do it NOW!  You know, like a week before the official "do it" day of January 1.

Maybe I will.  I just need to learn to kick myself in the pants to get and keep me going.

Davidson Christmas 2012

Last night was our family Christmas since Sam, Lynnette, and Lindley will head to Ft. Worth to spend Christmas with the Ogles.  We all met at our house for food and presents, in the usual Davidson fashion (a total train wreck).

The food was good, mainly because Molly cooked it all.  The only blips were the grapefruit cake, which everyone was too full to eat anyway (something about the egg whites not whipping up as desired) and the corn pudding (which refused to cook on time and was left in the oven during the present-giving-chaos and was promptly forgotten until some of the party-goers had left and somebody went to check on it, finding it had finally cooked to the well-done stage).  We feasted on meatballs, Paula Dean chicken/mushroom pockets, Sista Schu rolls, mashed (or creamed, depending on your heritage) potatoes, various Christmas-oriented junk foods, ravioli, and possibly some other stuff, stuffed being the operative word.

Once our Disney fleeces (we all had fleeces with our names and Disney characters embroidered on them, and no, I did not embroider them, and no, of course we did not get a family picture of all of us with them on) were stretched by our ever-widening girth, we headed to the living room for gift-ripping.  Since the living room couch was still undelivered and somewhere in Lazy-Boy Land, we all sat on the floor or dragged a chair into the room. And the presents began flying about.

I got many wonderful things, some of which are Disney pics, plaque, and even a Mickey/Minnie kissing salt/pepper shaker, along with new gloves, a pink hand-held blender, and a new eensie-weensie pink camera.  It was all very nice and very much appreciated.

But now, for my make-its.  The first two, which were for Lynnette and Mathieu (the in-laws, poor things), are so pathetic that they don't even deserve pictures.  Basically I put their names on their presents - an art bin for Lynnette and a portfolio for Mathieu.  Hopefully the gift cards that were attached to each made up for it.

The first thing that got finished was Steve's - a wagon for hauling around Lindley and Everley:
The "make-it" part?  Name and seat covers.  I take the "make-it" part rather liberally.

Everley taking the first ride - Lindley was on her way west.

Everley is a multi-tasker, as long as she has a driver

The next present that got finished was for Sam, Maribeth, and Molly (things go much quicker when you give the same thing to several people).  Unfortunately, I needed some help with this one, as the photos that I took were terrible.  Luckily, I have a professional photographer in the family, so Mathieu obliged at the last moment to bail me out.  The make-it part was when I went online to Walgreens and created the print (my make-it gets even more broadly interpreted at times).  Oh, and I bought the frame and framed them, too.

The doors in clockwise order starting with the red door are:  Ours, Sam/Lynnette's, Molly's, and Maribeth/Mathieu's.

The next gift to get finished was Everley's ABC book, which was basically a scrapbook where two pages each were dedicated to a letter represented by pictures of Everley (for the most part).  Needless, to say, some pages had more pictures than others (there just aren't a lot of words that begin with "X").

Okay, so you get the picture. Scrapbooking may not exactly be my talent, either, but I certainly have a beautiful subject!!

The last gift to get finished (that would have been Friday morning) was Lindley's, which was to be a fort because (a) Lindley likes forts (created by draping a quilt over whatever will hold it up in the coat closet), and (b) a few months ago, Lynnette said that she would like a canopy for Lindley's room (the kind that looks like a little circus tent-thingy).  So, I decided to combine the two for this occasion.  Early on, I decided to use a hula-hoop for the round part and an old Disney king-sized sheet for the main part.  I had some remnants from other projects that I decided to use for the other parts and bought some trim a few days ago to finish it off.  So I started.  And then my sewing machine decided to have a hissy fit and break the thread every few inches.  While I am sure this had to do with tension (mainly mine) or bobbins or something like that (note:  I think of sewing as hot-glueing things together with thread), I was still getting pretty frantic about this project getting finished.  It didn't help that I had sawed the hula-hoop in one place with the intention of threading it into the pocket I had made in the sheet, but after draining the hoop (who knew that hula-hoops contained water), it refused to hold its original shape, despite my best duct-tape efforts.

At this point, I knew I needed help, so I prayed that it would all work out, and it did.  I bought new bobbins, and the sewing machine got over itself and sewed smoothly with no breakage.  During the night, I remembered (or rather God reminded me) that there was a small piece of PVC pipe in the ground in the planter (marking a sprinkler), and I thought that maybe it would hold the hoop together, and it did, creating the roundness that was needed.  Pretty soon, I had a fort!
Okay, so the picture is terrible, so use your imagination.  Or come play in the fort with Lindley!  And no, this picture was not taken with my new pink eensie-weensie camera!!

And so there you have it - Davidson Christmas and Make-its 2012 is in the books.  Whew!!

My New Role Model

Not to worry people - the days of this "make it" gift thing are coming to a close.  Davidson Christmas will be on Friday night, so stuff has to be done by then, no matter how pathetic the gifts are turning out to be (technically, only two are pathetic - three are decent and three are pretty good).

I have to say, I will be glad when they are all done, because then I can catch up on the other stuff that I am behind in.  Like unpacking boxes and cleaning house and getting back on Weight Watchers and working out.

So the question remains, does one ever catch up?  Feeling like I've never been in such a place, I was just wondering . . .

It's There ...

The finish line of the "make-it" Christmas gift project of 2012 is within sight.  No, I haven't actually completed anything (or actually even really started anything), but I got another idea today.  That makes me closer to the finish, but still in the race - in the waaaay back of the race to gitterdun in  week (our family Christmas will be on December 21).

It's sort of like my performance in the "running" races I do.  I never win and usually come in at the end with the back-of-the-packers.  But eventually I finish.  And I will.  By next Friday.  Wonder if making an I.O.U.A.GIFT counts ...

Is It Time To Panic Yet??

According to my calculations (and I got out my adding machine, calculator, and slide rule to make sure), Christmas is two weeks away.  As in two weeks from today.  And my category in the family Christmas gift exhange is "make it."  As in make everybody's gift.  Now let's check the progress on this year's gifts:
Gifts to make: 8   Gifts made: 0

Some people I know quilt and are probably quilting and sewing to make crafty quilt things for their entire office building.  And when they're not sewing and quilting, they are apparently cooking and baking, probably for the office building next door.  Since I neither quilt nor cook, I shall have to think of other makeable things for this year's festivities.

I'm not totally out of it.  I have ideas for the 8-month-old and the almost-3-year old.  I also have an idea or two for one or two of the adults.  But I haven't started any of it.   I guess I should get started.  I think there's some leftover lumber, nails, and paint from the remodel - now to locate the Gorilla Glue ...

Remodel - Part Deux

Today marked the end of our big remodel project.  Except for a few odds and ends, it is complete.  In all, we enlarged the upstairs adding windows and a full bath, remodeled both downstairs bathrooms, remodeled the family room to include storage, installed two new hvac units, installed wall mounts for TVs in the family room and bedroom, and corrected a serious leak in the sunroom.  It's funny how long and slow the time seems when you're in the middle of such a project, but how quickly it seems to have passed once its done.

But now the real work (for me anyway) begins.  All the stuff that I packed up in boxes to get out of the house for the remodel to begin, has to be dealt with.  All the stuff that had to be removed from the bathrooms sits in boxes and drawers wanting to return home.  There are books and doo-dads and bric-a-brac that needs to find a place to be placed.  There's stuff in the dining room and in the bedroom and the living room - all stuff that came from other rooms that have now been declared clean.  Three boxes of stuff are now upstairs waiting to be put away.  Unfortunately, they are only being added to the boxes of stuff already up there that needs to be sorted.

One day, hopefully before Christmas, everything will be settled and I can just enjoy my new digs.  Maybe I can even Christmas shop in all the boxes of stuff - I know some people that are perfect for some of that boxed crap trove of treasures!!

Facebook Stalking - I Mean Reading

I thought I was weird because I tend to read stuff about people I don't even know (like if you liked/were tagged/commented on in a total stranger's ((to me)) page, I have to find out the back story - to me, it's kind of like reading a biography).  But apparently, I am only one of a lot of stalkers readers who participate in this practice - google it yourself if you don't believe me.  There were even a bunch of images to choose for facebook stalking (and some pretty funny cartoons).

So, the moral of this story is to hide your friends or whatever it is you're supposed to do if you don't want me to know all your business.  But you sure are going to cut down on my social knowledge!!

Stories From The Return Line

Today I was in the return line with some purchases that I had decided needed to go back to the store.  It's always interesting to hear what goes on there.  Today's stories included:
  • Some lady with a small TV/remote/manuals but no packing and/or box it came in.  While I could not hear the entire conversation (though not for lack of trying) I think it had something to do with a warranty.  After some discussion, she left, taking all her electronic equipment with her.
  • Some lady switching out blinds.  Which was probably an easy transaction, had the clerk in charge not been a distant relative of Ebenezer Scrooge.  I think she was also allergic to smiling and happiness.  Luckily for the blinds lady, Ms. Grumpy's shift was over and a pleasant clerk took over.  Blinds lady went home with coverings for her windows.
  • Some lady who parked next to me, returned her whatevers, and was headed back to her car with new purchases at the same time as I returned to my car.  Clearly a successful shopping trip for her!
But my favorite was the lady behind me, talking on her cell phone.  It was not hard to hear her conversation since (a) she was right behind me, and (b) she was talking loud enough for the entire store to hear her.  She started out by telling her phone buddy about all the cortisones she was on/given at the doctor - creams, shots, pills, and probably a drink.  She then proceeded to discuss how she had never had something like this before (to which I wanted to turn around and look, but it's hard trying to keep track of so many stories happening around you).  Then she and her phone buddy started talking about lunch, because Ms. Cortisone then said that she would be glad to pick up some food for her, but she didn't want to touch it, because as she said (and this is a direct quote), "This shit is contagious!"  Certainly not the words you want to hear from someone directly behind you in line.  She followed it up with some talk about poison oak, which may have been true or some crowd damage control, lest she find herself in a crowd of one.

It was time for my return transaction, so my brain became otherwise occupied, and Corti went over to cash a check (and ask where the pharmacy was, I would guess to get the various cortisone creams and lotions and whatevers that she had been prescribed).  I hope she cashed her check, picked up food for her friend, and got the medicinal relief that she needed.

I also hope I don't get whatever she had ...

What To Do?

I never watch that show "What Would You Do?"  Maybe it's because in those situations, I don't know what I would do, and even if I think I know what I would do, I can't be sure that I would do what I think I would do - you just don't know until you are actually in that situation.  But mostly I don't watch that show because I know it's made up situations made up for TV to make a show.  In other words, it's fake.

I don't like tricking people.  I don't like making people do stuff under the pretense of being real.  In a psychology course I took in college, part of an assignment was doing something in a public place that would cause a reaction.  I don't remember what I did, but I know I probably hated it.

Which brings me to a situation that I encountered in Walgreen's.  As I had my stuff and was headed to the check-out, I noticed a young woman sitting on the floor.  Her legs were splayed out in front of her and she was sitting on the floor and her head was down on the floor.  As I glanced at her, I saw she had a Walgreen's receipt with her stuff that her head was resting on.  There were several people in line, along with the Walgreen's check-out lady.  The young woman was just at the end of the counter.

Frankly, I didn't know what to do.  I didn't know whether to ask her if she was okay, or to ask the person ahead of me in line, or to ask the check-out lady.  Part of me wondered if this was some TV or psychology class stunt.  What should I do?

I did nothing.  I checked out and went to my car.  Nobody else did anything either.  I don't know what the young woman's story was, and I will never know if I should have been part of the answer.  It's probably the cynic in me, but it just didn't seem like a situation that warranted my attention.

The question will still remain with me, though - did I really do the right thing?

New Unna-wares

Okay, so it was time.  Or maybe even past time.  For new underwear, that is.  My existing ones were beginning (or actually had begun a long time ago) to show signs of the stress and strain that my rather ample posterior had been putting it through.  In other words, my under-britches were getting holy, and I don't mean the religious kind.

The underwear that I prefer for that region is by Victoria's Secret (too much information already?).  And NO - not that kind.  Vicky sells old-style granny pants - they just have to go back in Vicky's basement and pull them out of the mothballs (because we grannies like that smell).  Anyhow, as you would expect, they aren't as cheap as Fruit of the Loom from Target where you can get three dozen for $3 (or something like that). But they last longer and can withstand the tremendous pressure that my dimply butt puts on them.

Anyhoo, I had decided that I would wait until I has lost a certain amount of weight before I treated myself to some new undies.  And I waited.  And waited and waited.  Finally, I just started throwing away those undies that were really in sorry shape (like when the holes are so big you begin to wonder if it's a leg opening).  When I was down to just a few (and I don't do laundry as often as I used to, so it was beginning to be an issue), I decided to heck with the reward - I needed a fresh supply now.

Well, Ms. Vick was having a sale, so I bought seven (yep, SEVEN - I can go a whole week before running the washing machine!) new underwears.  And - get this - after they came in, I went back and she was having another sale so I bought five more!!  Are you impressed?  I am!  My fanny is happy and secure once more without britches holiness!!

So what's the moral of this story?  Simply this - sometimes you don't need a reason to treat yourself - you just need to treat yourself.  And sometimes, you just need new underwear.

Sunday

Today, as part of Marilyn's last day in Nashville, we had a busy day.  She started off by going to her former church when she lived here.  Once she got back home, she picked up dinner at the Cheesecake Factory, then we (me/her/Molly) proceeded to the Sprint store so she could update her broken old-timey flip phone to an updated new-from-Plates smartphone (thanks to Molly).  From there we went to the AT&T store, but left due to the long wait (moms will have to get updated later) and went directly to the pedicure place.  There we splurged on the deluxe pedi, complete with leg stone massage and foot paraffin wrap (yowza!).  Marilyn and I opted for sparkly red polish, in celebration of the season - Molly opted out of sparkles and instead went for a more subdued red.  At some point we decided to go all the way and got our nails done, too, again with the red sparkles (Molly went for clear).  Somehow I ended up with a bottle of red sparkly polish - not sure how that happened.

By this time we had worn Molly out, so we dropped her off and headed for a Wal-Mart trip (Marilyn needed containers to take home the caramel cake and chess pie that Steve had obtained on her behalf while he was in Mississippi).  We then had a bite at Sonic and went out to see Christmas lights - and promptly got sorta lost.  But thanks to her new phone and her quickly downloaded map app, we found our way back home, just in time for her to load up her stuff for her 6am flight home the next day, where I think she will need a rest from her weekend of racing, buttoning, prettying and shopping!!

This morning we walked/wogged/ran in the St. Jude's Marathon Relay.  By we, I mean Marilyn, Molly, Karen P, and Karen B.  We each ran a leg of varying length (3.1 miles - 6.5 miles).  It was a lot of fun - and a lot of waiting.  It was also the epitome of team - Marilyn saved us time at the front by jockeying her way into the first corrals.  The Karens and Molly saved me time by going really fast on their legs.  And I did my part with the last leg - just by finishing.  It was a great morning to be out (a bit chilly at the start but definitely warmer by noon when it was my turn) and for a great cause. All in all, a great Saturday!!
