A Sad Day

Every runner has a story.  Whether you're an elite runner or a back-of-the-packer, you have a purpose and a reason for crossing that start line.  For some, it's to reach a personal time record.  For others, it's simply to finish.  But for anyone who participates in a race, you're never really sure how your race will unfold and how it will end.

Today in Boston, nobody could have imagined the horrific end that occurred at the finish line around the four hour mark.  The elite runners had long finished, and the runners who were coming in were finishing with good times.  And then the finish line was rocked with two explosions.  Chaos and confusion ensued as people rushed to help those injured and make sense of the situation.

We're still days and perhaps weeks away from any explanation, if there could be one.  We don't know who would do such a horrible thing. It simply makes no sense.

I will never understand the hate and meanness that would cause a person to do this horrific thing.  All I can do is hope that the love and kindness shown today by so many as they raced to help the injured is remembered always.  Because in the end, the only thing that can ever overcome hate is love, which has to start with each of us, caring about each other, no matter what.
