Day Two - Ups and Downs

Day 2 began with a school bus ride to our starting point.  KP and Jo (our speedy walkers) had left on the early bus, while our slow group took a later bus.  This was after KB had her breakfast of scrambled eggs, which were apparently the best she’s ever had.  Today’s route was through Berkeley.  The first few miles were around a lovely view of the water (which wasn’t so lovely many hours later as we walked back along the same path).  We crossed over the freeway bridge and headed into residential Berkeley, where we met some really nice people.   We loved the Safeway employees who were handing out cream puffs and eclairs.   We met a lady (who was a breast cancer survivor)  at our 7-11 stop (where we got much needed fluids like Diet Coke, Gatorade, and grape juice which might have been fermented) who offered to buy us sunscreen (perhaps because our faces were blistered from not slathering on enough the day before) and our beverages.  We saw another survivor who was playing her bagpipes for us outside on her lawn.  We were cheered by a lady and her daughter as they sat on their roof.

We continued our walk through Berkeley, debating whether their home game had started or was going to be later that evening (it was half-time).  We saw the Claremont Hotel and were refreshed by Peet’s Coffee who were furnishing free iced coffee and tea. We went through a neighborhood with breathtaking views of the city, plus some breathtaking boobage.

We were getting a little weary when I thought I would spice things up and decide to step on an uneven part of the pavement, twist my ankle and go down. After the sweep van and bike safety dude checked on us and were satisfied that I was okay, I taped up my ankle and we finished our remaining eight miles.  We trudged past that beautiful scenery from earlier in the morning, boarded our school bus, and were soon back at camp for the night.  Today's 20 miles were in, for a total of 40 for the week.
Pretty views - on the first pass, anyway!
